A grainy black leather background covers the entire surface. Hundreds of little fish in glossy black leather swim in tightly packed rows, all in the same direction. They look like an anonymous, orderly, silent crowd going about its daily life.

At the center, part of the school changes color and turns bright red. Without breaking the overall rhythm, these fish arrange themselves into a large heart that seems to beat in the middle of the dark canvas. The contrast between black and red conveys the work’s message. Love, empathy, and solidarity emerge as forces capable of bringing order and harmony to chaos.

Near the top of the heart, a single little red fish swims apart, smaller than the others. For the artist, it is a metaphor for individuality that has not yet joined the common heartbeat. It is a tender touch, and also a question posed to everyone: finding one’s place in the collective heart.

The entire work plays with black on black. The glossy fish catch the light and change depending on the viewing angle. Their reflections shift from deep black to dark green shades, standing out against the matte grain of the background. Each silhouette is cut with a punch and then applied by hand, giving the surface a vibrant, almost relief-like texture. Its full richness can be appreciated when seeing the work in person.

The Spanish title, El Corazón (“the heart”), pays tribute to Adriano, the artist’s friend and collaborator, who spent thirty years in Mexico.
