These faces are the essential element. Rendered in chalky white and outlined with a thick, jagged black line, they stare at the viewer with large, round, wide-open eyes, often askew. Where the mouth should be, there is a tight scribble, a tangle of lines resembling a seam or clenched teeth: these men do not speak. The central figure, larger, wearing a white shirt and black tie, commands attention with his broad build; the others decrease in size toward the right, a silent hierarchy from an organizational chart.
The suit is the true subject here. The uniform of the professional world unifies the bodies until they become indistinguishable—a single silhouette for four people. What Hamelink stages is this conformity that absorbs, the anxiety beneath proper attire, the impossibility of saying what one thinks when one’s role speaks in one’s place. The eyes, however, betray everything: they are the only place where something remains alive.
True to his style, Hamelink works with raw, expressive lines, somewhere between neo-expressionism and cartoon vocabulary, with blue splashes crossing the black mass and recalling the gesture of painting. The handwritten signature at the lower left is inscribed like a tag within the composition.
