Acrylic on cardboard — a sketch of rare intensity, in which the city is captured in just a few gestures.

The narrow vertical format immediately imposes the sensation of an urban canyon: two walls of buildings enclose a strip of white sky that runs from the top of the composition down to the ground. This light band, left in reserve and worked with a palette knife in irregular layers, is the painting’s only breathing space — everything else is mass, shadow, and weight.

On either side, the façades are built up in broad vertical brushstrokes, black, slate gray, and anthracite. No windows are drawn, no cornices described: it is the gesture alone that constructs the architecture. The streaks left by the brush bristles, the pulls of color, the areas where the cardboard remains visible — everything contributes to suggesting height, the repetition of floors, and the crushing effect of the perspectives.

At the bottom, the street. A few black patches and white flashes are enough to establish the cars and their headlights; two or three clear vertical strokes evoke the silhouettes of passersby. Nothing is identifiable, yet everything is recognizable. That is the painter’s entire mastery: knowing when to stop.

The work is constructed entirely in black and white, without the slightest touch of color. This chromatic reduction focuses attention on the light — the brightness in the background toward which the street opens, giving the painting its vanishing point and its reason for being. One thinks of the backlight of a winter afternoon, or the white light that follows a downpour, a recurring motif in the work of the artist who signs Rainman.

Painted on cardboard in a modest format, this piece belongs to the practice of study: the moment when the artist searches, decides quickly, and lets the material speak. It possesses all its freshness and vitality.
