Against a slightly uneven ivory background, a large black circle commands the center of the canvas, drawn in a single broad, continuous gesture. The shape is not perfect: it stretches into an oval, grows thicker along the left side, thins where the brush lifted, and reveals in the upper right the point of overlap where the stroke crosses its own beginning. This is where the entire trajectory of the gesture can be read—its speed, its pressure, its breath.
The central void is not simply blank. It is inhabited by fine ink splatters, suspended droplets, and nervous filaments that seem to have burst forth at the moment of impact. A vertical drip crosses the right side like a second line, more fragile, almost involuntary. At the bottom of the ring, the material frays into an irregular fringe: the brush has run dry, and chance has taken over.
The work lies in this tension: the absolute mastery of the stroke and the total acceptance of accident. The circle evokes the ensō of Zen tradition—this form painted in a single breath, expressing both fullness and incompletion, the whole and the void. But here, the splashes spilling all the way to the edges of the canvas bring the gesture back toward Western Expressionism, toward a more physical, almost impulsive energy.
