With "Duke," EAZ brings to life one of the most recognizable invaders from the Space Invaders pantheon: the creature with raised antennas, half-crab, half-cosmic insect, here adorned in a deep violet with amethyst reflections. Antennas spread and legs apart, Duke seems frozen mid-descent, ready to swoop down on its target—a nearly heraldic posture that gives it the appearance of a futuristic emblem.
True to his signature technique, EAZ builds the figure pixel by pixel: each square is a tile of paper cut, beveled, and hand-lacquered, with shiny facets that catch the light with dark or iridescent flashes. Violet, a color historically associated with royalty and mystery, transforms this arcade enemy into an aristocratic presence—a literal "Duke," a noble intruder from a distant galaxy.
In the background, the white horde printed tone-on-tone continues its silent descent, a ghostly army that recalls the video game origin of the motif while emphasizing, by contrast, the sculptural materiality of the central figure.
