Green Skull - Lego
Artist:Brick Board Builder
A green skull on a yellow wall. It would be hard to be more direct: a square format, a centered subject, two colors that clash. Green Skull takes up one of the oldest motifs in art history, the vanitas, and filters it through pop art. A skull that is not trying to scare, but to burst into color.
The skull is built across the full range of greens, from fir to anise, and modeled on the forehead with flashes of white, cream, and sky blue. The black-rimmed eye sockets are not empty: they overflow with pink, fuchsia, purple, and lavender, like two bouquets. Other floral touches punctuate the temples and the top of the head, while the jaw reveals a row of ivory teeth. It brings to mind Mexican calaveras as much as Warhol’s Skulls: here, death is celebrated in color.
The background deserves a closer look. This yellow is not a flat expanse but a constructed monochrome: hundreds of bricks, plates, slopes, and arches in the same shade, set at different heights. The shadows do the drawing, and they change with the daylight.
Up close, the details give the subject its full meaning. Tiles printed with 100 bills are scattered throughout the skull, while another bears the word « FAME » in yellow: money and glory, precisely what classical vanitas paintings reminded us are fleeting. A matter of available stock or a knowing nod, it is up to each viewer to decide. Around them, small leaves, lavender flowers, yellow stars around the edges, and two ornate purple tiles complete the treasure hunt.
Brick Board Builder assembles its artworks by hand, without a predetermined design, using LEGO® bricks all sourced from reuse: arriving in bulk from across France, partly through the nonprofit Rejoué, they are cleaned and then sorted one by one. Pieces that had reached the end of their first life, brought together in a work that speaks of what passes and what remains: Green Skull can never be recreated identically.
Neither a print nor a reproduction: a unique, numbered piece, bearing the artist’s plaque and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
