El Corazoncito
Artist:Guido Zappoli
El Corazoncito is an intimate, geometric variation on the theme of love, one of the recurring threads in Guido Zappoli’s work. Here, the artist replaces his school-of-fish motif with a universal symbol, the heart, and creates a play of mise en abyme. Against a smooth, deep black leather background, nearly two hundred and fifty small red hearts line up in staggered rows to form one large heart. Each retains its own shape, and together they create a shared heartbeat.
Each small heart is cut from patent red leather with a punch, then applied by hand using double-sided tape. The glossy finish plays a central role: depending on the viewing angle and the light, the hearts glow with pearly, pink or almost white reflections, before returning to a deep red. The surface seems to move, as though the shape were gently vibrating. By contrast, the matte black background absorbs the light and brings out the large heart with great elegance.
Its compact square format of 40 × 40 cm makes it a piece that is both striking and intimate, easy to hang in a bedroom, living room or office. It is also a meaningful gift idea for celebrating love or friendship.
The title plays on the Spanish language, paying tribute to Adriano, an artist friend who lived in Mexico for thirty years. Corazoncito, “little heart,” is a common term of endearment in Mexico. It refers both to the size of the artwork and to the hundreds of small hearts that make it up.
