Oculus Giraffa
Artist:Brick Board Builder
The title says it plainly: oculus, the eye. It is the subject, and everything else exists only to lead us to it. The work does not show a giraffe; it shows a gaze - that of an animal framed so closely that the animal itself disappears, leaving only the skin, the eyelashes, the bones beneath the coat, and that dark pupil staring back at the viewer.
It is the densest piece in the series. No flat areas, no resting zones: the entire surface is a swarm of tiny LEGO® bricks - studs, one- or two-stud plates, technical fragments - assembled by the thousands. The coat reads as pure pointillism: ochres, tawny tones, burnt earth colors, deep browns, heightened by touches of lavender, turquoise, pink, and acid green that have no reason to be there and yet create all the vibration in the color. Seen from a distance, the tawny coloring is perfectly accurate. Seen up close, it is impossible.
On the left, night. An entire section of the painting falls into an almost total blackness, where all that can be made out are reliefs, volumes, and pieces catching a grazing light. This darkness hides nothing: it pushes. It draws the eye toward the right, toward the warmth, toward the eye. It is a composition in balance, where shadow works just as hard as color.
Pointillism is not a figure of speech here; it is the method. By reducing the module to its smallest unit, Brick Board Builder recaptures the gesture of painters who applied color in dots without ever mixing it, leaving the viewer's eye to perform the synthesis. Each brick is a brushstroke, each row a hesitation, and the image only takes shape when viewed from a distance.
No brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was selected by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks that arrived loose from all over France and were sorted one by one - some of them sourced through community reuse thanks to the Rejoué association. Pieces without a history that find one again. At this level of detail, the number of pieces handled runs into the tens of thousands: this work can never be recreated identically.
