With "Perry," EAZ reverses the polarity of his series: for the first time, darkness fills the frame. Against this deep black background—the very same as the original arcade screens—emerges a creature in an electric turquoise, almost phosphorescent, seeming to radiate its own light. With raised horns and outstretched legs, Perry takes the shape of the famous invading crab, frozen mid-attack.
The artist’s signature technique operates here with a new intensity: each pixel is a piece of paper cut, beveled, and hand-mounted in relief, whose lacquered facets catch the light like lagoon sparkles against an interstellar space backdrop. The contrast between the saturated turquoise and absolute black faithfully reproduces the luminescence of vintage cathode-ray screens—as if the screen had solidified.
In the depths of the background, an armada of anthracite gray invaders, printed tone-on-tone in the darkness, continues its barely perceptible descent. This horde lurking in the shadows gives the work an almost unsettling dimension: Perry is only the visible scout of an invasion gathering behind him, in the dark.
