Sentinel Of Liberty

The title announces a sentry, and that is exactly what we see: a helmeted guard figure, tightly framed, caught in a harsh backlight. The face fills the entire space and extends beyond the frame. Nothing surrounds it, no setting, no escape route—only this head turned toward the light, jaw clenched, gaze fixed.

Everything hinges on chiaroscuro. The left half is swept by a white, almost glaring light that flattens the cheek and helmet into broad, smooth surfaces. The right half sinks into a dense, fractured shadow, teeming with dark pieces that the eye must search through to recover the shape. Between the two, there is no gentle transition: a sharp boundary cuts the face in half and gives it all its tension. This is cinematic lighting, the kind reserved for characters we do not yet know how to judge.

Deprived of color, Brick Board Builder works solely with value. The palette is limited to a few dozen shades—pure whites, ivories, creams, pearl grays, mouse grays, anthracites, and blacks—and each brick is chosen for its precise position on this scale. The broad light plates in the background establish calm expanses; technical pieces, gears, discs, and tiny fragments construct the disorder of the dark areas. The contrast between these two textures, smooth on one side and bristling on the other, does as much work as the value itself.

This is the workshop’s most demanding exercise. One gray that is too light and the modeling collapses; one black in the wrong place and the eye gets lost. In an image this saturated, a mistake cannot be corrected.

No brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was selected by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks collected loose from all over France and sorted one by one—including some sourced through solidarity-based reuse thanks to the Rejoué association. Pieces with no history finding one again. At this density, the number of bricks handled runs into the tens of thousands: this work can never be recreated identically.
