When Winnie Comes to Visit and We’re Busy
Artist:Benny Arte
In a dilapidated room with peeling walls, a young man is slumped on an old baroque red velvet sofa. With a virtual reality headset strapped over his eyes and sneakers on his feet, he is somewhere else, completely absorbed. Beside him, Winnie sits obediently in overalls, watching him with an expression that is both patient and a little lost. He came to visit… but no one seems to notice.
Facing them, an imposing server tower crackles in the gloom: bluish screens, orange cables winding like roots, an incandescent core pulsing with a fiery light. The machine seems alive, almost more present than the human connected to it.
With humor and a touch of melancholy, Benny Arte explores our relationship with screens and the virtual world. The contrast is striking between the gentle childhood companion, a symbol of simplicity and friendship, and the technological coldness that captures all the attention. The textured, richly layered painterly treatment contrasts the sofa’s warm tones and the light with the blue-grays of the abandoned room.
A tender and clear-eyed work that invites us to take off our headsets from time to time and enjoy the company of those who are here.
