Artist:Andy Warhol
Part of the famous series of five color variations, this screen print features one of the most iconic portraits in Pop Art: Brigitte Bardot, an absolute icon of French cinema and an international symbol of the freedom of the 1960s.
The tight framing, focused on the face, isolates the star against a deep black background that makes the figure emerge like an apparition. Her hair, rendered in solid areas of saturated coral pink, spreads out in wild, graphic masses, while her face, bathed in a milky lilac pink, is structured by the harsh black contours derived from the photographic screen. Two accents electrify the composition: emerald green on the eyelids and the orange-red of the lips, the print’s sole touch of warmth.
Andy Warhol takes a photograph by Richard Avedon and subjects it to his process of dissociation: the photographic line on one side, arbitrary color on the other. The result is no longer a portrait but a logo—Bardot’s face transformed into a pure surface, as reproducible as a can of soup. That is the entire subject of the work: the manufacture of celebrity, the star reduced to her image and reproduced infinitely.
