Artist:GNelly
A bold, delicious raspberry pink stretches from one edge of the canvas to the other. It’s the color of Palm Springs, a California desert oasis known for its pink doors, turquoise pools, and modernist villas. In the center, Luxxo appears in full for a change: planted firmly on both legs, arms slightly outstretched, he looks just like a rag doll striking a pose. The signature character of GNelly is outlined in several passes of a jittery black line that gives him a slight tremble.
The head combines white, turquoise, yellow, and pink. The two black crosses for eyes are there, one topped with a few pink lashes, and a little red heart is scribbled on the cheek. A navy-blue band is knotted around the neck like a scarf. The torso, meanwhile, wears a pink jacket fastened with two rows of yellow buttons with red centers. This dandyish look suits a city where Hollywood stars once came to get away from it all.
The rest of the body is a patchwork, with a different pattern on each limb. One turquoise arm is dotted with white, the other is orange and white, speckled with three pink dots. One leg shifts from plum to turquoise, then pale yellow, with a white flower on the thigh and three little crosses on the foot. The other stays light-colored, streaked with orange and black loops. The paint, applied with a palette knife, forms thick ridges that you can make out even on the jacket buttons.
The name « Palm Springs » runs vertically down the torso in small white letters. A few white splashes sparkle around the figure. A hand-painted black frame borders the composition, the name Luxxo runs along the right edge, and GNelly’s signature appears in a black cartouche at the bottom right.
With its automotive varnish, the pink takes on a candy-like shine. Smooth and glossy like icing, the surface intensifies every color and reflects the light in the room, so the painting changes mood throughout the day.
