Satoshi San

A sculpture of a face, entirely in matte black, mounted on a slender metal stand that presents it at eye level like a piece of contemporary archaeology.

The work takes the form of a facial mask rendered in low poly: the human face is reduced to an assemblage of triangular facets and angular planes, as if a 3D model had been frozen halfway through its rendering, before the surfaces were smoothed. The forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, chin—each element is reduced to its minimal geometry. Only two horizontal slits for the eyes and an opening beneath the nose pierce the surface, hinting at the void behind: the mask is hollow, and it is precisely this hollowness that gives it meaning.

The absolute black and matte finish, without any reflection, absorb the light and eliminate any reading of the material. Depending on the angle, the object radically changes character: viewed from the front, it regains an almost human, symmetrical and impassive frontality; in profile, it becomes a pure edge, an angular blade; from three-quarters, it veers into Cubist abstraction. Seen from behind, only a smooth, empty shell remains—the very embodiment of absence.

The title, Satoshi San, provides the key to interpreting the work. It refers to Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin whose identity has never been revealed—the most famous pseudonym of the 21st century, followed by the Japanese honorific suffix san. Mitch Richmond shapes here the portrait of someone who has no face: an anonymous figure of authority, a power without a body. The mask becomes the emblem of an era in which influence is exerted without identity, in which one can remake a global financial system and then disappear.

The polygonal aesthetic reinforces this idea: it is that of unfinished digital imagery, of a file before processing, of the human as seen by the machine. The work engages as much with African and Japanese ritual masks—with which it shares its museum-style presentation on a stand—as with the contemporary imagery of the crypto world and online anonymity.
