This computer symbol is aesthetically interesting in its own right, but it is also an ideal medium for philosophical reflection, particularly on the question of the boundaries of a work of art. By providing an opportunity to convey a polymorphic and conceptual message beyond the visual and immediate appearance of the creation, the QR code paves the way for every form of creative experimentation.
Thus, its artistic potential is unlimited and offers a highly interesting way to create interaction with the public, at a time when we all have an iPhone or smartphone capable of scanning it.
A digital tool for reflection, a means of engaging viewers in the artistic process, or even of appropriating the work by equipping themselves with their phones. The QR code has the ability to create a new language and open new frontiers between art and digital technology. Will it become a new artistic symbol that defines 21st-century art?
In my work, the message is to move beyond the immediate and instinctive nature of works of art, which derives from the essence of the QR code, in order to offer meaning beyond the distribution of its pixels in space. It provides a specific possibility for artistic expression.
It was the design of QR codes that initially inspired me; I liked the graphic quality of the shape. There was something almost constructivist about it—a rationalization of the image, a polymorphic vision of art.
