Artist:Brick Board Builder
After New York, Paris. From a distance, a dazzling white mass occupies the upper-right corner of the painting and descends diagonally into a pitch-black night. The title provides the key: the Eiffel Tower. But Brick Board Builder does not draw it; he lights it up. No postcard silhouette, no iron latticework: only the monument’s light, so bright that it erases its contours, and the city stretching around it.
The rest of the painting is a matter of blues. Azure, medium blue, aqua green, navy blue, highlighted with light gray, beige, and a few touches of lavender: hundreds of small, cool pieces spread out from the white, dense near the tower and sparser as they move away. A bright trail descends from the upper-left corner toward the center, while in the lower half, the light stretches into fine vertical lines before fading into the darkness. It is this deep, almost matte black that gives the white its full force.
Up close, the two extremes reveal themselves to be very different. The white is the most intricately constructed area of the work: arches, curved pieces, slopes, large plates, and printed tiles overlap in thick relief, in shades ranging from snow white to ivory. The black, meanwhile, keeps its secrets: gears, propellers, a ladder, and technical elements set tone-on-tone, revealed only by grazing light. And between the two, the discoveries: a “POLICE” tile, a yellow number 4, small blue gears, and a tiny white figurine.
No plan guided Brick Board Builder’s hand: the image was built by eye, brick by brick. All of them are reused LEGO® pieces, collected in bulk from across France, partly through the nonprofit Rejoué, then cleaned and sorted one by one. Pieces from hundreds of different boxes, brought together to illuminate a single monument: Eiffel Blue can never be recreated identically.
