NYC Red - Lego

From a distance, it is hard to tell. A lava flow, a nebula, a blaze? The title settles it: it is New York at night, viewed from the sky. A city no longer defined by its buildings but by its light, which Brick Board Builder has chosen to render in red. No skyline, no landmark, no postcard reference point: only the energy of a metropolis that never goes dark.

The composition follows a single line of force. A glowing artery runs vertically through the format from top to bottom, orange at its starting point, white-hot in the center (pinks, pale yellows, almost-white beiges), before spreading out in the lower left into a broad expanse of vivid red. Around it, the night is not black: it is brown and dense, flecked with navy blue, dark green, and purple. Here and there, flashes of azure blue and turquoise cool the whole, like signs, screens, or illuminated rooftops glimpsed through a porthole.

Up close, the city disappears and the material takes over. Red is no longer a flat field of color but a relief: plates, smooth tiles, round pieces, perforated technical bricks, and slopes rise across several levels and catch the light differently depending on the time of day. You have to move closer to find the small pink flowers, orange stars, and unexpected pieces slipped into the pattern, the ones the eye only catches on a second look.

As always with Brick Board Builder, no plan preceded the assembly. Each brick was chosen by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® pieces, which arrived in bulk from all over France, were cleaned, then sorted one by one, partly with the help of the Rejoué solidarity reuse association. This work without a blueprint gives NYC Red its texture and irregularity: the piece can never be recreated identically.

Neither a print nor a reproduction: a unique work, built brick by brick, numbered, and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
