Chris Giio, a Spanish artist born in 1981, developed a strong passion for painting from childhood. Her artistic universe draws inspiration from Pop Art, which she revisits with a comedic, rebellious, and nonconformist approach. Through her works, she seeks to immerse the viewer back into the world of childhood by featuring iconic characters from popular culture.
Her creations skillfully blend emblematic references such as Campbell’s soup cans, Andy Warhol’s Brillo boxes, Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dogs, and Basquiat’s crowns. These elements are combined with graffiti, expressive typography, and backgrounds rich in symbols. Her characters often wear attributes that serve as “armor” — leather jackets, black sunglasses — concealing faces that reveal deep emotions: sadness, fear, anxiety.
For Chris, childhood is the foundational period of every human being. She believes we live in a world that moves too fast. Her characters, although seemingly happy on the surface, often embody a feigned joy that actually masks issues such as depression or anxiety.
A recurring and distinctive element of her work is the crosses in the eyes of her characters, symbols of internal pain — sadness, insecurities, fears. The use of bright colors, pop references, and typography is an integral part of her aesthetic, creating a strong and unique visual identity.
Chris develops two distinct lines in her Pop Art production:
-
“Art Toys Collection”: minimalist works with clean white backgrounds, featuring characters in leather jackets accompanied by references like Campbell’s soup cans or Balloon Dogs, along with a striking phrase.
-
“Basquiat Tribute Collection”: rich and intense compositions, with backgrounds saturated with graffiti, words, and symbols, featuring a central character that captures attention.
