The work takes the American one-dollar bill as its subject on a large scale, but frees it from its flatness: the surface is undulating, as if captured in mid-flight, suspended between two breaths. This frozen movement gives the object an immediate sculptural presence, very different from the framed print one might expect.
The image is produced on a translucent, glossy support (thermoformed plexiglass / Altuglas), which captures the light and reflects changing highlights depending on the viewing angle. Here, the bill’s design is superimposed on a photograph of a cloudy sky: deep blues, cottony whites, and clear patches pass through the engraving. On the front, the portrait of George Washington and the official inscriptions stand out in black and green against this celestial atmosphere; on the back, the unfinished pyramid, the Eye of Providence, and the Great Seal of the United States float in a palette of blue and silvery gray, with the central “ONE” becoming almost an open window onto the sky.
The concept is characteristic of Karl Lagasse: diverting the most universal symbol of purchasing power in order to make it immaterial. Here, the dollar weighs nothing anymore—it becomes a cloud, a current of air, a promise. The artist plays on this ambivalence between the American dream and contemporary vanity, between money as a driver of freedom and as an illusion.
The work bears the artist’s signature at the bottom left of the back, along with an edition number, with the entire series produced in a limited edition.
