Artist:Lasveguix
On a wall that seems to have been put up, torn down, covered over, and then torn down again, Lasveguix brings forth a paper Marianne. The work belongs to the aesthetic of the ripped poster, inherited from poster artists, in which each tear reveals an older layer: fragmented capital letters, fields of blue, coral red, and bright yellow, pale pink layers surfacing like raw skin.
At the center, a female portrait rendered in black, encircled by an oval medallion and a radiant halo, directly quotes Shepard Fairey's graphic vocabulary: high-contrast screen printing, ornamental roses, a lotus rosette, and a raised brush as an attribute. This is the tribute announced by the title. But the face, calm and faintly melancholy, gazes beyond the viewer, escaping the militant iconography surrounding it.
Around her, the republican motto is reassembled in fragments — LIBERTY, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY — but always worn away, perforated, and partially erased by time and successive layers. The blue on the left, red on the right, and white in the middle discreetly recreate the flag, while a remnant of a movie poster at the lower left (“International Prize Winning Motion Picture”) anchors the whole in a popular, urban memory.
The work draws its strength from this tension: the national allegory and the street-art icon overlap on a ruined surface, as if the grand words survived only in tatters — still legible, never intact. Marianne appears less as a triumphant emblem than as a figure of resistance to wear, endlessly pasted back together.
