Burger - Lego

A one-word title for a subject the whole world knows. From Claes Oldenburg to Andy Warhol, the hamburger is one of pop art’s totems, and Brick Board Builder offers its own version, using the only material they allow themselves. The framing is that of a poster: a close-up on a black background, cut off by the left edge, so tightly cropped that we are no longer looking at a sandwich but at a craving.

The image is read in layers. At the very top, the bun, domed and golden, built in beige, orangey yellow, and vivid orange, with flashes of white and pink that make it shine. A line of shadow, then the filling: bold reds and crimsons, browns of grilled meat, touches of pink and cream. Lower down, the lettuce spills out in anise green and yellow, before the bottom bun closes the whole thing in caramel and sand tones. No layer is a single color, and that is what makes the image so mouthwatering.

Black occupies nearly half the picture. It is not an emptiness but a constructed monochrome, where grazing light reveals a shell, wheels, and the edges of stacked pieces. Its role is simple: to show nothing, so that everything else bursts forth.

Up close, the recipe reveals itself. The lettuce contains real LEGO® leaves, and small yellow stars speckle the bun like sesame seeds. A Batman logo has slipped onto the left edge, along with a yellow tile featuring a laughing face on the side of the bun. The black conceals a number 50, a tile covered with chalk-drawn formulas, and another decorated with pastries. And near the signature, a small round bun-colored piece, placed there like a miniature burger.

The hamburger is the symbol of something quick and easy, identical everywhere. This one is the exact opposite. Brick Board Builder assembled it slowly, by hand, without a predetermined plan, using reused LEGO® bricks sourced in bulk from all over France, partly thanks to the nonprofit Rejoué, then cleaned and sorted one by one. A recipe without a technical specification, impossible to recreate identically.

Neither a print nor a reproduction: a unique piece, numbered, bearing the artist’s plaque and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
