A New York avenue ablaze with the light of sunset, where the city seems to catch fire. Of the entire Street Lights series, this version is undoubtedly the most chromatically daring: here, orange reigns supreme.

The composition is built around a deep central perspective. The roadway recedes toward a gray-blue distance where the buildings fade into a cool mist—the only tranquil area of the canvas. All around it, façades rise in immense vertical masses of orangey red, vermilion, mauve, and burgundy, applied in broad descending bands that streak the surface from top to bottom. These are not depicted buildings, but blocks of pure color that convey their weight and verticality.

At the center, a tall pink and lilac column divides the composition in two, like a skyscraper bathed in low, slanting light. This pale band, the gentlest area of the painting, provides a moment of relief between the two incandescent masses framing it.

Traffic occupies a narrow central line. A yellow taxi—an unmistakable signature of Manhattan—leads a line of gray vehicles that dwindles into the distance. Painted in a few confident strokes, without the slightest superfluous detail, these silhouettes are enough to establish the scale: they are tiny compared with the enormity of the façades, and it is precisely this relationship that gives the image its power.

The lower half is devoted entirely to reflection. The wet asphalt mirrors the city in long vertical rivulets, the oranges and vermilions extending downward in liquid streaks, interrupted by areas of plum and black. Two pale diagonals, drawn with a firm gesture, cross the foreground on either side—sidewalks, curbs, or simply lines of force—and counter the rigor of the perspective.

Here, the palette is pushed to incandescence: saturated orange, brick red, coral pink, deep burgundy, with a few cool accents—the gray-blue of the background and turquoise touches on the car bodies—that keep the whole from slipping into monochrome. The texture of the canvas remains visible, with scraping and impasto on display, the materiality fully embraced.

From a distance, one recognizes an avenue at twilight. Up close, everything dissolves into an abstract field of colored verticals, almost Rothko-like. It is this constant shift that defines the painting of Adam Wajerczyk: the city is not a subject, but a pretext for light.
