A Manhattan street awash in magenta. This version of the series pushes its chromatic approach to the extreme: the city is no longer painted in its own colors, but in a single color—a saturated, almost aggressive electric fuchsia pink that engulfs the façades, sky, and ground.

Yet the construction remains perfectly rigorous. Two rows of buildings narrow in perspective toward a gap of white sky at the center, a narrow vertical strip of cool light piercing the surrounding incandescence. On the left, a building rendered in slate gray and black provides the necessary dark counterpoint; on the right, the pink mass extends until it gives way to deep black at the edge of the canvas. The painter thus organizes the space into three zones: coolness, warmth, shadow.

Oblique lines cross the composition in beams—cornices, awnings, canopies—drawn with quick strokes in gray, beige, and black. They structure the depth with the efficiency of an architectural sketch, while introducing a diagonal dynamic that contradicts the scene’s frontality.

At the heart of the painting, traffic. A yellow taxi, vivid against the pink background, leads a line of gray and white vehicles that diminishes into the distance. A few touches of orange and bright yellow indicate headlights and signs. These warm accents, tiny in relation to the scale of the canvas, are enough to bring the scene to life.

The lower half belongs to the reflection. The wet road reflects everything in long vertical drips: the pinks of the façades, the black silhouettes of passersby, and the yellow streaks of headlights descend in liquid striations to the lower edge. A bright diagonal cuts across the left foreground, like a stroke of light cast across the image.

The gesture is apparent everywhere: broad brushwork, scraping that allows the canvas weave to breathe, bold impasto, deliberate drips. On the right, silhouettes of pedestrians can be made out, reduced to simple dark patches—the crowd without faces.

From a distance, a perfectly recognizable New York street in the rain. Up close, an abstract field of fuchsia and black verticals. This oscillation is the hallmark of Adam Wajerczyk: he does not paint what the city is, but the impression it leaves.
