A face fills the entire canvas, frontal and monumental, painted with an urgency that immediately grabs the eye. The eyes, immense, are two black masses ringed by thick brushstrokes, lit by a single white highlight—a fixed, insistent gaze that is difficult to withstand. The nose and mouth are rendered in a few quick gestures, the slightly open mouth revealing a blood-red gleam.
The flesh of the face is a chromatic field: incandescent orange on the left temple, turquoise and acid green on the forehead, yellow, violet, and white blended in visible impasto. Two red circles traced with spray paint settle on the cheeks, like clown blush or ritual makeup—a distinctly graffiti-like gesture applied over a painting, recalling where the artist comes from.
The gray, scraped background, scored with black charcoal lines, allows the canvas to breathe and age. Drips descend everywhere: black and dense, they erode the lower part of the composition and form a veritable cascade beneath the chin. They make the painting weep as much as they build it.
The title, Love, runs counter to what the image first appears to show. There is nothing gentle or reassuring here: rather, a flayed, raw face, somewhere between a carnival mask and a death-watch portrait. This is precisely Daniel Jonez’s proposition—love as a raw, charged state, sometimes painful, never decorative. Trained on the walls of São Paulo, the artist paints the way one tags: quickly, forcefully, without regret, allowing accident to become part of the work.
