A horizontal abstract composition, constructed like a contained explosion. At the center, a dark mass—deep blacks and slate grays applied with a broad brush—forms the core of the work. Around it orbit blocks of pure color: vermilion red, saturated orange, golden yellow on the right, and on the left, a tear of cyan and cobalt blue that cuts through the surrounding warmth.
White plays a decisive role here. It occupies the margins, breathes between the masses, and erupts at the center in splashes projected onto the black—like a rain of sparks or a negative starry sky. These projections give the work its title: something is revealed in the darkness.
Drips are everywhere. The red, orange, blue, and black descend in vertical streams to the bottom of the canvas, traces that openly acknowledge gravity and drying time. Monika Spiewak does not correct them: they inscribe the duration of the gesture into the image, reminding us that painting is as much an event as it is an object. The canvas thus preserves the memory of its own creation.
The overall balance rests on this tension between the centrifugal energy of the warm colors and the motionless density of the black center. One can read into it whatever one wishes—a mental landscape, a detonation, a thought in the process of forming. This is precisely what the artist’s gestural abstraction seeks: to impose nothing, to suggest everything. The handwritten signature in the lower right discreetly closes the composition by Monika Spiewak.
