Bahamas

Against a deep ultramarine blue, as profound as the open sea, Luxxo appears in a close-cropped, frontal bust portrait. The signature character of GNelly is instantly recognizable: a rounded silhouette, a smooth head, two cross-shaped eyes. Ultramarine says it all: beyond the seas, where the painting takes us.

The head is split in two, dark red and black on one side, white on the other, with the eyes answering each other in negative. On the left, a white cross set against black. On the right, a black cross inside a yellow disc edged with a few lashes, like a little sun. The body, meanwhile, is a celebration: lime green, fuchsia, candy pink, saffron yellow, turquoise, red, and black overlap in thick areas of color, worked with a palette knife, with every stroke left visible.

As always in the artist’s work, Luxxo carries memories of the journey. The word “Bahamas” is handwritten on one shoulder, “Luxxo” on the other. Two tropical flowers bloom across the chest, one white with a yellow center, the other yellow. A white spiral suggests a shell collected on the beach; a row of circles, bubbles rising; three small triangles, sails in the distance. A white line loops across the crown of the head, while fine multicolored splashes sparkle around the silhouette.

A freehand-painted black frame borders the composition, and GNelly’s signature appears in a black cartouche at the bottom right.

The finish completes the effect. Automotive clear coat, the kind used in body shops, gives the paint a perfectly smooth, glossy surface. It lends the blue the depth of lacquer, brightens every color, and turns the painting into a mirror: light and reflections in the room shift across it throughout the day, like water.
