A work of silence, reduced to two forces: light and its absence. The painting can be read in a second and contemplated for a long time.

The composition embraces radical simplicity. The upper four-fifths of the canvas are occupied by a vast expanse of white, ivory, almost pearlescent, animated by very broad circular movements applied with a brush or palette knife. These concentric spirals, barely visible at first glance, give the surface a sense of breathing: the light is not uniform; it turns, thickens toward the edges, and brightens at the center until it becomes blinding. Oscar Bruno treats the white material here as a space of depth, not as a void.

At the bottom, a dense black band cuts horizontally across the canvas. It is opaque and mineral-like, ending in an irregular, vibrating edge where a few white flecks break through the dark mass—like a ridgeline, a coastline seen from afar, or the foam of a wave. This torn boundary is the true subject of the painting: everything happens there, in the abrupt meeting of the two zones.

The result allows for several readings. It may be seen as a marine horizon beneath a sky saturated with light, a backlit beach, land crushed beneath a white sun, or simply the pure confrontation of two pictorial values. Oscar Bruno does not decide between them; he keeps the work suspended in this fertile ambiguity between landscape and abstraction, between representation and pure material.

Texture is essential. The grain of the canvas, the striations left by the tool, the uneven thicknesses of the white, and the drips of black keep the work rooted in gesture and manual labor. The real light striking the painting reveals or conceals these reliefs depending on the time of day and the angle—the canvas is never quite the same.

Belonging to the Black and White Stile series, this piece forms part of an ongoing exploration of maximum contrast and economy of means: two values, one line, and an entire mental space.
