Square format, frontal framing, no escape. The face fills the canvas from edge to edge, slightly off-center to the left, and stares at you without blinking. This is not a hero’s portrait: it is a face-to-face encounter.

The white makeup is the defining feature of this work. It would have been easy to apply it as a flat block — Brick Board Builder does exactly the opposite. The makeup is cracked and dirty, streaked with blues, grays, mauves, beiges, and browns, like paint applied in haste and already beginning to flake. Nothing stays in place. You can make out the skin beneath, the dark circles, the fatigue. This is makeup that does not conceal: it reveals.

Then come the two warm areas. Around the eye, a halo of deep reds and acidic pinks spreads like a bruise. Lower down, the mouth extends far beyond the lips, in a mass of dark reds, oranges, and fuchsia running from one cheek to the other. This smile is not drawn; it is spread — and it is precisely this overflow, this inability to stay within the lines, that makes the character so unsettling.

On the right, darkness occupies a third of the canvas. And this is where the patient gaze finds its reward: within that blackness, dozens of small green bricks are scattered, sprinkled like sparks, along with a few touches of orange, pink, and brown. A green that belongs to nothing we can see — except what we know about the character. You have to move closer to distinguish them, and once you have seen them, you can see nothing else.

No brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was selected by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks arriving loose from all over France and sorted one by one — some of them sourced through solidarity-based reuse thanks to the Rejoué association. Pieces without a history that find one again. This refusal of a pattern is what gives the work its texture, irregularity, and identity: it can never be recreated identically.

Neither a print, nor a reproduction, nor artificial intelligence. A constructed, numbered artwork delivered with its certificate of authenticity, framed and signed on the back.
