Hamelink
Born in the Netherlands in 1976, Bart Hamelink is a self-taught artist who, in just a few years, has established himself as one of the most recognizable voices on the contemporary art scene in the Netherlands. Based in The Hague, he describes himself as a neo-expressionist and “cartoon” artist, committed to a raw, human, and honest form of narrative painting.
An immediate visual language. Hamelink creates his narratives with acrylic, ink, and marker. His style combines a raw, expressive line with cartoon-like figures, bold colors applied in contrasting blocks, and striking typographic elements. These characters, with their simplified faces, wide-open eyes, and bodies distorted by emotion, often bear words painted directly onto the canvas—slogans, confessions, cries—which shift the image from the decorative toward the confessional.
Joy that scratches. Beneath the apparent lightness of the cartoon language, the message is direct. Through this practice of playful honesty, the artist explores the full spectrum of human emotions, social difficulties, and the beauty of vulnerability. At once funny and poignant, his works trigger a process of resonance and reflection in the viewer, not without a deliberate element of discomfort. Solitude, belonging, identity, what we show and what we keep silent: his recent paintings address the gap between social image and the instinctive part of the self, the feeling of being close to others yet disconnected, and the omnipresence of screens in our lives.
A practice that travels. Sold around the world, his painting owes its broad appeal to an innovative style combined with substantial subject matter; regarded as an emerging artist on a steep international rise, Hamelink is now seen as a major figure on the contemporary art scene. His original works, large-format acrylic paintings on cotton canvas—up to 130 × 160 cm—are hand-signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. His work is also distributed through major online art platforms and direct studio sales, and followed by a community of more than 16,000 followers on social media.
