Friends for ever - Lego
Artist:Brick Board Builder
You recognize them before seeing even a single brick. R2-D2 in the foreground, stocky, leaning on his three supports. C-3PO behind him, standing with his hands on his hips, wearing the reproachful look he is known for. The Star Wars droid duo, inseparable since 1977, needs no setting to exist: the title says it all, friends forever.
Everything sets the two characters apart, and the construction emphasizes this. R2-D2 is a light-colored mass, built in white, ivory, and cream, broken up by panels of cobalt blue, navy blue, and purple, beneath a gray and blue dome. C-3PO, meanwhile, poses a real challenge: how do you make gold out of bricks? Brick Board Builder's answer lies in a mix of browns, caramel, beige, and cream, speckled with hundreds of lime-green and bright-yellow points. Up close, you see only touches of color. From a distance, the eye blends them into metallic reflections, and the armor begins to shine.
The background plays the opposite role. It is a smooth, solid mauve, without a single brick, only slightly darkened at the bottom to suggest the ground. The two droids stand out from it in relief, almost like a sculpture mounted on the wall. One detail ties everything together: small lavender points scattered across R2-D2's white body bring the background color up into the subject. A black frame encloses the whole piece.
Up close, the characters dissolve into plates, tiles, round pieces, and technical elements, stacked across several levels. You have to look for the small orange stars tucked into C-3PO's armor: in that galaxy, they were a must.
Two machines rebuilt piece by piece: the subject and the method come together. Brick Board Builder assembles by hand, without a predefined plan, LEGO® bricks all sourced from reuse, arriving in bulk from across France, partly thanks to the social enterprise Rejoué, then cleaned and sorted one by one. No blueprint could reproduce Friends for Ever identically.
