Red Skull - Lego
Artist:Brick Board Builder
Green on yellow for Green Skull, yellow on red for Yellow Skull, and now red on green: from one piece to the next, the background of the previous one becomes the subject of the next. With Red Skull, the color has come full circle. And it ends on the series’ most tense pairing, that of two complementary colors that repel each other as much as they attract. The skull does not rest on the green wall; it bursts out of it.
The red ranges from vermilion to crimson, heightened with vivid orange and darkened with brown at the edges. The forehead opens onto an expanse of cream, white, and pale pink, while the cheekbones are emphasized with fuchsia and violet. In the eye sockets, outlined in black, sky blue, lavender, and a few touches of green mingle, as if the background had slipped into the gaze. Beneath the nose’s black cavity, a row of ivory teeth topped with a pink line completes the dead head’s decidedly lively look.
The background is a constructed monochrome, made entirely of flat-laid plates, slopes, round pieces, and plant stems. But this green is not innocent: it is scattered with tiles printed with 100 bills, more than a dozen of them, extending into the skull. The color of money covers the wall in a vanitas, and the subject needs no further comment.
Up close, more discoveries await. A printed eye, placed in the middle of the forehead like a third eye. Two orange tiles marked « ADVENTURE », and one white tile marked « RESCUE », lost in the green. On the left temple, a sky-blue sign adorned with a fish and a turtle. So many fragments of stories, torn from the boxes these pieces came from.
Because each one has had a first life. Brick Board Builder works exclusively with reused LEGO® bricks, arriving loose from all over France, notably through the nonprofit organization Rejoué, then cleaned and sorted one by one. They assemble them by hand, without a predetermined pattern, which is what makes Red Skull impossible to recreate identically.
