With “Duke,” EAZ brings to life one of the most recognizable invaders in the Space Invaders pantheon: the creature with raised antennae, half crab and half cosmic insect, here adorned in deep purple with amethyst highlights. With its antennae spread and legs apart, Duke appears frozen in mid-descent, ready to swoop down on its target—a nearly heraldic pose that gives it the appearance of a futuristic coat of arms.
True to their signature technique, EAZ constructs the figure pixel by pixel: they are a clever blend of paper and vinyl, whose glossy facets catch the light with flashes that are sometimes dark and sometimes iridescent. Purple, a color historically associated with royalty and mystery, transforms this arcade enemy into an aristocratic presence—a “Duke” in the truest sense, a noble intruder from a distant galaxy.
In the background, the white horde printed in tone-on-tone continues its silent descent, a ghostly army that recalls the motif’s video-game origins while highlighting, by contrast, the sculptural materiality of the central figure.
