DeLorean Back

Here, nothing is filled in. Black occupies everything, and the car exists only through what catches the light: a roof edge, the ridge of a hood, the rear louver grille, the trim of a bumper. Brick Board Builder does not build the DeLorean; it builds its light—the light that glides across brushed steel when the machine is at a standstill, in the dark, just before.

From a distance, the eye completes the drawing on its own, and the silhouette appears immediately, unmistakable among a thousand. Up close, the line reveals itself for what it is: hundreds of white, gray, silver, and anthracite LEGO® bricks, stacked, offset, and layered, trembling from one row to the next. It is a line drawn by hand, with jolts and hesitations, and it is precisely this tremor that gives the bodywork its metallic grain.

Then there is the color, held back until the final third. The rear lights flare up—deep reds, scarlets, oranges, yellows—and this sudden warmth is the only event in the picture. It is enough. In the lower left, embers escape and streak beyond the frame, like a trace left on the asphalt.

Discreetly, at mid-height, two dates can be read in the darkness: 1985 – 2025. Forty years. That is all the work says, and there is nothing to add.

Not a single brick was placed according to a plan. Each piece was chosen by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks that arrived in bulk from all over France and were sorted one by one—including some sourced through charitable reuse thanks to the Rejoué association. Pieces without a history that find one again. Against such a stripped-back background, the slightest irregularity is visible: this work can never be recreated identically.
