Artist:Brick Board Builder
This is the most radical piece in the studio. Whereas Brick Board Builder usually fills every inch of his frame, here he builds almost nothing—a lock of hair, an eyebrow, a cheekbone, a mouth, a chin. Five or six white fragments, set against absolute black, separated by empty space. Nothing connects them. And yet the face is there, complete and unmistakable.
The reason is that the work does not unfold on the canvas but in the eye of the viewer. Our brains are made so that they cannot tolerate an unfinished form: they fill in, close up, reconstruct. BBB exploits this reflex with a surgeon’s precision—each fragment is placed exactly where light would strike a real face, and the black takes care of the rest. The painting does not show a portrait: it triggers one.
The palette is reduced to the extreme. Off-whites, ivories, pearl grays, a few bluish grays in the transitions: no color, no effects, nothing to distract. The chosen pieces are flat, smooth, and clean-edged, laid horizontally to catch the light like strokes of white paint on a black background. The lock of hair at the top begins with a fluid movement; the brow ridge and eyebrow form a single taut line; the upper and lower lips are treated separately, leaving a gap between them that is enough to create a mouth.
What ultimately strikes you is the generosity of the silence. Three quarters of the surface bear no bricks at all. On a BBB painting, this is a gesture: that of a builder who accepts not building, and who trusts the viewer’s gaze.
No brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was chosen by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks that arrived in bulk from all over France and were sorted one by one—including some sourced through solidarity-based reuse thanks to the Rejoué association. Pieces without a history that find one again. Against such a bare background, the slightest misplaced piece would make the illusion collapse: this work can never be recreated identically.
