The title says it plainly: oculus, the eye. It is the subject, and everything else exists only to lead us to it. The work does not show a giraffe; it shows a gaze—that of an animal framed so closely that the animal itself disappears, leaving only the skin, eyelashes, the bones beneath the coat, and that dark pupil staring back at the viewer.

It is the densest piece in the series. No flat areas, no room to rest: the entire surface is a swarm of tiny LEGO® bricks—studs, one- and two-stud plates, technical fragments—assembled by the thousands. The coat is rendered in pure pointillism: ochres, tawny shades, burnt siennas, deep browns, heightened with touches of lavender, turquoise, pink, and acid green that have no reason to be there and yet create the entire vibration of the color. Seen from a distance, the tawny coloring is perfectly convincing. Up close, it is impossible.

On the left, night. An entire section of the painting sinks into near-total blackness, where only the reliefs, volumes, and pieces catching the grazing light can be made out. This darkness conceals nothing: it propels the gaze toward the right, toward the warmth, toward the eye. It is a composition in balance, in which shadow works just as hard as color.

Pointillism is not merely a stylistic device here; it is the method. By reducing the module to its smallest unit, Brick Board Builder rediscovers the gesture of painters who applied color in dots without ever mixing it, leaving the viewer’s eye to synthesize the image. Each brick is a brushstroke, each row a hesitation, and the image takes shape only from a distance.

Not a single brick was placed according to a plan. Each element was chosen by hand from a stock of second-hand LEGO® bricks that arrived loose from all over France and were sorted one by one—including pieces sourced through solidarity-based reuse thanks to the Rejoué association. Bricks with no history of their own, given a new one. At this level of detail, the number of pieces handled runs into the tens of thousands: this work can never be recreated identically.
